Primeval

I miss Primeval, the weekly hope that someone might get eaten by a dinosaur. The premise wasn't all that subtle: Walking with dinosaurs did well - lets do running from dinosaurs. It did better as a kids show in spite and probably partly because of not being initially aimed at kids. Once evil Helen stopped flashing her cleavage and just started being Cruella de Ville, and the scripts started mixing in slapstick and sibling bickering in that old Scooby way it started to pick up. It was a lot better than Demons, which tried to imitate the Buffy vibe but failed to create anything remotely interesting in terms of plotlines and characters. Primeval had no such pretensions and did a lot better just on a monster-a-week basis.

Every ridiculous fantasy series needs a grumpy serious person to ground it, and Nick Cutter was that very grumpy parent figure. It lost a bit when he left, although grumpy beaurocrat Lester did ok in the short time he had. The show was also beginning to work up a nice line in Evil Women. I liked the last bit when they were jumping between times in pursuit of Helen, and getting lost in strange times, a bit like the chase through the worlds with the White Witch in Magicians Nephew ..

There were rubbish episodes to be sure. I would nominate the Giant Chicken Debacle for one, and I wasn't that sure about the mediaeval knight. Which I suppose did for the show in the end, only the dinosaurs eating people worked, so it couldn't really go anywhere.
